With Bernina or bernette
The store was opened in July 1984 by Tim and Dawn Owen who owned BERNINA Pinetown.
At that point in time there were very few models in the BERNINA product range, namely BERNINA 930, 931, 932, 910, 801 and 802 and the first overlocker the Bernette 203 was introduced within weeks of opening the store.
The current owner of BERNINA Durban, Debbie Becker, is the daughter of Tim and Dawn. With all the fabric, sewing machines and creativity surrounding Debbie, as a child, it was no wonder she joined the family business, during 1984.
In August 1991, Debbie partnered by her husband Edward, purchased the store and moved into bigger premises on Broadway in Durban North.
During 2004 the store moved up the road to even larger premises.
Today the shop has a good range of haberdashery, BERNINA Sewing machines, overlockers and embroidery machines, cotton fabrics, a sewing school and a full technical workshop on the premises.
The couple take great pains to give customers exceptional personal service.
They have invested in training staff and so there is always someone who is able to assist in all aspects of the business.
